How to read aviation accident statistics
Historical accident totals describe a collected record. They become measures of risk only when they are paired with suitable exposure and interpreted within the same operational context.
Counts answer “how many,” not “how risky”
An aircraft type with many recorded accidents may also have flown millions more hours than a rare type. A country with more accidents may have a much larger aviation system. Raw counts are useful for describing the historical record, but they cannot establish a safety rate on their own.
A rate needs a denominator
Useful denominators include departures, flight hours, passenger journeys, distance flown, fleet size, or years in service. The appropriate choice depends on the question. Comparing accidents per departure with accidents per aircraft-year can produce different but individually valid results.
Keep the comparison population consistent
Commercial passenger operations, cargo flights, military missions, training flights, and private aviation have different operating conditions. A useful comparison applies the same inclusion rules, period, geography, severity threshold, and exposure measure to every group.
Fatalities and accidents measure different things
A year with one catastrophic accident can lead the fatality table while having relatively few accidents. An era with many small-aircraft losses can show the opposite pattern. Review both measures and the underlying events before drawing a trend line.
Account for reporting and survival bias
Recent commercial accidents are usually documented more completely than early, military, or remote events. Aircraft that remained in service for decades had more time to enter the historical record. Changes in reporting quality can resemble changes in safety unless the coverage is considered.
